Are You Looking For? A chubby cheeked little girl smiled in her dreaming as in her mind, bright
jelly beans and candy eggs danced and jumped for joy as they hurried to fill a
giant pink basket. A large fluffy
purple bunny seemed to be in charge as he directed
the remaining colored eggs jumping from the basket, where to run and hide all
around the grassy yard. The speckled
eggs and fruit and coconut eggs all
found their places inside the basket and nestled into the cellophane grass; as
the little yellow chicks followed them to find their own spots near the pink and
white candy bunnies. Chocolates and confections in colors and shapes of all
descriptions lined up to take their places in the basket along with the others.
Long lines of shiny jelly beans danced with colorful
precision and dropped off into little nooks and crannies where the others had
not filled in the vacant spaces. All
had to be covered with the bright newness of springtime when it came to filled
Easter baskets, you know. It was the
rule. As the purple bunny turned from his gesturing,
he suddenly shouted, “Stop!!!” and just as
suddenly, everything did stop with an echoing silence. “What is that
wood thing doing over there? Even
there in the background, it will spoil the spring panorama that we are creating
here! No! No! No! This is not at all
acceptable!” he shouted. Two bright robins flew onto the handle of the basket with fresh daisies in
their mouths for the big bow that the bluebirds were forming at the top.
“But, that’s the reason we do all of this every spring,” they
chorused. “Without
that old cross, there wouldn’t be an
Easter or a time to proclaim the newness of creation,” the declared in unison.
“They’re right,” the bluebirds echoed from the ends of the streamers.
“The Father told us of the sacrifice of His Son on that wooden cross and why
He did it to save the mortals on earth. Without
that love that hung there so long ago, people would only have separation from
the Father and no hope at all...that’s why we celebrate in the spring when the
newness of the season reflects the newness of life that His Son died for.”
There was silence in the yard as each word was taken into all the tiny hearts. “Wake up sleepy head!” her daddy whispered into her dreaming. “Go and look outside and see if the Easter bunny has come!” he urged. The little girl jumped from er warm bed and hurried outside with her daddy right behind her. The yard had bright colored eggs peeking from under and behind every flower and bush….and there was the big pink basket aand the bow and daisies...and the fluffy purple bunny was there beside it...just like in her dream. She smiled as she surveyed the lovely scene. But then she stopped in the middle of the yard and looked around and around as if she was looking for something else….something that was missing. "What is it, dear?” her daddy questioned. “What are you looking for?” “Something that we need, daddy, we need it to make everything complete”
she answered, still searching with her eyes.
“I’m looking for the love... I’m looking for Jesus’ cross.” And her Father smiled.
